You are cordially invited to the prestigious $10,000 Del Mar Invitational on StableDuel. This is a high-roller tournament with a $100 buy in. The top 15 spots will at least double their entry fee and top spot looks to be taking home about $3,500. This Del Mar meet has been extremely profitable. My personal Del Mar cores have cashed for Karma users at a 100% rate. That being said, today’s the day to get lucky one more time. If you don’t want to play in the $100 tournament, there is a $5 contest as well that can be entered. In order to win the $5 contest, you may need to pivot and get a little different with some value horses.
If you need a refresher on scoring, please refer back to our debut article that goes a little more in-depth, located here.

High Price Favorites
Parnelli $11,000 – Race 4
My opinion in this race is that Parnelli needs to be used or else likely avoid this race unless we get a scratch show up today that makes a cheaper horse valuable for points at StableDuel. Proven in distance and settling for runner up placings, today looks to be the day this horse becomes a winner. Normally maiden races are where I look to grab cheaper horses or debuting horses and avoid such a heavy price. When looking at the other horses in this race, you’ll be drawn to Editor In Chief trained by Bob Baffert. This is a $650,000 horse debuting, but if you watch the last workout, Editor couldn’t go by his workmate. It’s too early to trust that horse. North Pole looked tired last time out. Interested to see what two turns will do to this horse, but also would avoid until proven. Eliminating those two horses leaves you with some ultra longshots.
Fluffy Socks $8,500 – Race 5
It’s closing weekend at Del Mar, (sadface) and if you’ve been watching this week, you’d notice a lot of east coast jockeys and horses shipping in. It’s not cheap to ship a horse, so when you see a horse that runs elsewhere ship across the country with a jockey that comes with it, there’s normally a good reason for it. Fluffy Socks ships in from New York and has the king of New York, Irad Ortiz, on top. This horse is super classy in this field. At $8,500, it seems like we get a discount for a horse that likely wins this race. I do have some reservations about the speed of this horse matching some lighter raced newcomers, but I will side with the first point I made about shipping a horse across the country and assume the trainer picked this race for a reason. This horse will be on 100% of my tickets.
Mid Price Plays
Domestic Spending $6,000 – Race 9
This is certainly the high side of ‘Mid-Price plays’, but it fits well to piggyback off the thoughts above. We have a phenomenal horse in the Cox barn, shipping from the east to California. This is the Grade 1 Hollywood Derby and would certainly be an impressive win for this horse. I love the thought of this horse working out with other Cox horses like Sistercharlie and Uni, proven winners. Domestic Spending is lightly raced with only 4 starts, but has 3 wins and third to show for it. I wont take away from any of the other horses in this race either. Decorated Invader ships in from New York. Smooth Like Strait is making a name for himself in California. Should be an absolute blast of a race and hopefully we can get this mid-price horse home against some mega-talented horses.
Value Plays
Pulpit Rider $1,000 – Race 3
There’s not many horses sub $1000 that make sense to play today. The oddsmaker was not friendly and instead I was forced to use more $3,000 horses than I normally do. But I will say that Pulpit Rider is probably my favorite cheap horse of the day. Seems like there is a lot of pace up front… Mo See Cal and Nasty will need to carry this race the distance, but I expect them to work down each other. Zee Drop is interesting to grab the win if pace kills the front runners, but Pulpit Rider should be able to get in for minor awards. The past 2 years at Del Mar, Pulpit Rider has ran this distance 3 times on the same surface. The record is 1-1-1, never missing the money. For $1,000 and the second fastest speed figures, no-brainer to use this horse.
