During the “regular season” (or so I call it), my PGA Punt Plays article was fire for the last month or two. Almost every week near the end I targeted and touted an extremely cheap golfer that wound up finishing in the top 10 (a handful in the top 5!). I now will take that same approach and research and apply it to a handful of golfers who may or may not get a ton of exposure, but who I think match up perfectly with the event’s course and who have decent recent form.
Weekly Recap
CH3 – MC
Si Woo Kim – Finished 26th with -12
Pat Perez – Finished 6th with -17
Patton Kizzire – Finished 55th with -6
Scott Brown – Finished 68th with E
The RSM Classic
The event is played at the Sea Island Resort in Sea Island, GA on the Plantation Course. It plays as a Par 72 at 7058 yards with Bermuda greens.
Bud Cauley – $7900 DK | $9800 FD
In terms of course history, Bud finished 8th here last year andddddd missed the cut in the 3 out of the prior 4 years he competed in this event. Buddy C comes in at 4th overall in total strokes gained. He leads the field in SG: T2G and SG: ARG. His weakest stat is 72nd in SG: P. Not a huge fan of Bermuda greens it seems.
Kevin Streelman – $7000 DK | $8500 FD
The Man of Streel missed the cut 3 years ago at this event but followed it up with a 36th and then a 17th here last year. Streelman clocks in at 9th overall in total strokes gained. He has 4 stats in the top 4 included leading the field in SG: BS. His worst stats are SG: SG and SG: P as he also is no bueno on Bermuda.
Charles Howell III – $9100 DK | $10800 FD
Yes. I wrote about him last week. Yes. He was the only play to miss the cut. Yes. He missed the cut here last year. BUT, he made the cut each of the 4 years prior, with a 9th 3 years ago and a 13th here 2 years go. He comes in 8th overall in total strokes gained and his SG: T2G, SG: BS, and SG: OTT are all inside the top 9 of the field. His worst stat is SG:P but nowhere as low as the Bud and Kevin.
Bill Haas – $7800 DK | $9600 FD
Haas also missed the cut here last year. He made the cut each of the 3 years prior with his worst finish being 33rd. Haas is 14th overall in total strokes gained. He doesn’t lead the field in any stat or even crack the top 18 in any of them. He is simply consistent across the board with his recent form.
Brendon de Jonge – $6200 DK | $7000 FD
The cheapo of the article, BDJ only missed the cut here once in the last 5 years (2 years ago) and was actually the runner up here 4 years ago. This guy is actually SECOND overall in total strokes gained. EVERY stat of his is inside the top 20 with SG: T2G, SG: BS, and SG: APP all being in the top 9. He is the best play in this article in regard to playing on Bermuda greens. At his price, you just need him to make the cut to hit value.
