PGA Top DFS Plays: Open Championship

I made a little headway with my Top DFS Plays last week.

A blistering start was let down by two mediocre middle rounds before my best 6-for-6 and 5-for-6 lineups made a run on Sunday.

It was a breakeven week but the type of week that has me excited for the Open Championship this week.

The last major of the season will be played at Royal Troon (par 71, 7,385 yards) in Troon, South Ayrshire, Scotland.

Brian Harman is the defending champion, but like the PGA Championship and U.S. Open, the Open Championship uses a rotation for the event.

It was last played in 2016 where Henrik Stenson and Phil Mickelson ran away from the field. Stenson defeated Mickelson by three strokes.

And just like last week’s Genesis Scottish Open, the weather can be unpredictable on the Scotland west coast.

But again this week’s event is expected to have some favorable playing conditions. Winds are expected to range in the 10-15 mph range the first two days of the tournament.

Onto my Top DFS Plays for the Open Championship:

10K & Above

Scottie Scheffler ($12,800)

Well, if you liked Scottie at Pinehurst, this course should be no different.

He’s the best tee to green and approach player on the PGA Tour this season. Then add in he’s long and straight off the tee.

Scheffler’s approach game is equally as strong with wedges and long irons, which will be needed to tame Royal Troon.

All six of the 10K golfers earned spots in my Top 10 this week. Good luck picking the right combo of stars and scrubs.

9K & Above

Collin Morikawa ($9,900)

Morikawa may not be long off the tee but he’s long enough with his deadly accuracy off the tee.

He ranks 2nd SG: Accuracy off the tee and has 16th or better finishes in nine straight event despite being ranked 131st in SG: Distance off the tee.

But his approach game has been slightly off despite being a strong part of his game. If he starts clicking on his approaches, he will make my Top DFS Plays some money this week.

8K & Above

Tony Finau ($8,700)

Finau has returned to elite form thanks to his putter.

He has gained strokes with his putter for three straight events. In those three events, he has finished Top 8 or better.

And he remains elite in three of the categories I used this week in my spreadsheet. He’s Top 10 in SG: Off the tee, SG: Approach and par-5 scoring.

7K & Above

Aaron Rai ($7,300)

Rai continues to be one of the hottest golfers on Tour as he has five straight Top 20 finishes, including three straight Top 10s.

He is accurate off the tee, has great iron play and is a Top 10 scrambler on Tour this season.

Akshay Bhatia ($7,000) joins Rai in the Top 10 on my spreadsheet this week.

Punt Plays

Last week the DP World Tour players let me down, so I turned my attention to the PGA Tour golfers this week. Davis Thompson ($6,900), Si Woo Kim ($6,800) and Russell Henley ($6,700) each earned spots in my Top 20.
