Course: East Lake Country Club

Fast Facts

  • Par 70 approx. 7346 yards
  • Bermuda Greens (12+ on the stimp; FAST)
  • Field: 30 players; No cut with staggered leaderboard to start
  • green size approx. 6100 sq. ft. (average)
  • Donald Ross Design
  • Hard to hit fairways: 55% here vs. TOUR average of 62%
  • Corollary Courses: PGA National, Plainfield CC, Sedgefield CC, TPC Southwind
  • Course Fit Targets: Webb Simpson, Rory McIlroy, Billy Horschel, Justin Thomas, Dustin Johnson, Sungjae Im, Daniel Berger, Xander Schauffele, Ryan Palmer, Harris English

Course and Weather Notes: We’re back to a course with decent history as East Lake has hosted the last official tournament of the “season” (before a massive layoff of 3 days before the next season starts) and while guys can go low here, it is imperative to keep it in the fairway and be able to navigate typical Donald Ross undulating greens. The Bermuda greens run quite fast, over 12 on the stimp, and for the limited games I’m playing, I will definitely put a premium on guys who have accuracy over distance, have a strong birdie or better game, and also who have a solid course fit on the comp courses listed above.

SuperDraft Ranks and Thoughts

Both DFSKarma and myself have been getting more and more exposure and interest to SuperDraft and I wanted to begin to give some thoughts and ranks for those contests as they do things a little bit differently and although I’m still new and learning I think there is a definite edge to be had with less sharks, no salary cap to worry about, and a different roster construction compared to FanDuel and DraftKings. Below I will post how scoring is done and my favorite 15 guys to build in a 6-person lineup. There are no salaries so if you wanted to take the top 6 ranked players in the world, you can do that if you please (doesn’t seem like a +EV strategy). As you’ll note, the lower quality player, the higher the multiplier they get for fantasy points and the top dogs, such as DJ/Fleetwood/Brooks, etc won’t get nearly the same bonuses but can be expected to outperform the lower tier guys.

Weird tournament compared to the rest of the year with only 30 players and each one is assigned a starting score, meaning that the ultimate lowest score of the week is the winner of the FedEx Cup, which is a new format starting last year. To put this into context, instead of all players starting at Even and then playing 4 days, DJ starts at -10, Rahm at -8, and Justin Thomas -7, etc, etc. I think it will be difficult to get unique, but I also think people will overrate the starting points and not target the players who will be super aggressive to advance their current standing and make more money. I think the key focuses this week are the guys who can get hot but also hit a lot of fairways… this rough is very penal and if you’re scrambling trying to make par all 4 days, you’ll be screwed. These greens are fast Bermuda so I’m looking for guys who have solid splits on those, hit fairways, hit their long irons well, and will also factor in the course comparisons above to see what guys play well at these types of courses.

Below is my table of 10 guys I’m interested in and sign up for core plays to see my SD core for the week!

StatHero Ranks and Thoughts

Several months ago, we partered with a very innovative fantasy company called StatHero and what makes them so enticing is similar to betting, you’re not competing against 100k people in a GPP contest with less than a 0.001% chance of winning but rather playing against them. The rules are simple, you beat the “StatHero” team, you move on, and if you don’t, you lose. The goal is to get to the end and either decide with other users if you want to split the pot or you can keep playing to try to get the mega prize. One of the bigger advantages is that you can actually see StatHero’s lineup before you construct your own so you know what you’re up against and how contrarian/different you want to get. Below I will post the scoring format and will give my thoughts for how I would construct this week as well as show what StatHero is using for Round 1.

Note that for PGA it is round by round, not the full tournament, and you have an “MVP” spot in which you get 2x points. You get to pick 5 players (TOUR Championship I believe they’re using 4 players instead of 5 due to the limited field) but you have to be careful because once you use players in a round, if you advance, you can’t use the same players again.

It’s super fun and we had a TON of success last year in NFL so go download it on the Apple Store and Android users should be able to download from the Google Play store very, very soon.

TOUR Championship Round 1

CPT – Bryson DeChambeau

Player 1) Hideki Matsuyama

Player 2) Tony Finau

Player 3) Marc Leishman

My favorite players for CPT in round 1 are Webb Simpson or Justin Thomas. Webb just took a week off and THRIVES on Par 70 courses with Bermuda greens and combined with the fact that he’s having an incredible season, I think he can way outscore Bryson. Thomas you may want to save, but putting him in there behind Webb isn’t a terrible idea as he’s the best iron player in the world and hits the ball very far and very straight. Since you don’t have to worry about pricing on StatHero, I don’t mind filling in with lower tier guys like Billy Horschel/Ryan Palmer/Joaquin Niemann. I think I will end up playing either Webb or JT at CPT and then using 3 of the following:

Ryan Palmer, Daniel Berger, Joaquin Niemann, Scottie Scheffler, Tyrrell Hatton
