PGA Top DFS Plays: Sony Open in Hawaii

Well, at least my lineups did better than my suggested Top DFS Plays to the PGA Tour opener last week.

I believe it’s an achievement to be plus money after a signature event, where I have struggled the last two seasons.

But now we return to a full-field event at the Sony Open at Waialae Country Club (par 70, 7,044 yards) in Honolulu, Hawaii.

The late Grayson Murray (17 under) won the event last year in a playoff as he defeated Keegan Bradley and Byeong Hun An.

The Waialae course features tight fairways and mostly flat greens where accuracy and good putting can bring home a title.

Onto this week’s Top DFS Plays for the Sony Open!

10K & Above

Corey Conners ($10,200, 21 percent rostered)

Conners may be primed for a big season.

His biggest weakness has always been the putter, but he stormed out the gates leading the field at The Sentry last week. He gained 1.852 strokes with his putter for a T5 finish.

Now he returns to Waialae where he has made the cut all six times he has played the Sony Open. Those finishes include 4 Top 15 finishes.

9K & Above

Sahith Theegala ($9,100, 9 percent)

Theegala doesn’t fit the mold of a potential winner at the Sony, but he’s long enough to take advantage of short approach shots with good lies.

But if he gets on the greens in regulation, Sahith can get hot with the putter.

He is he Top 30 vs. the field with SG: Putting. And he played well in the second round (3-under) of last year’s event, missing the cut by a stroke.

8K & Above

Kurt Kitayama ($8,600, 12 percent)

Kitayama comes into the week ranked 5th on my spreadsheet and played well during the Fall Series.

He finished 25th or better in all three of his events, including Top 10 finishes at the Shiners Children’s Open and Zozo Championship.

Kitayama will need to be at the top of his elite approach game to overcome accuracy and putting issues to finish as one of my Top DFS Plays. And he ranked Top 30 on the Tour last season in all three approach buckets key at the Sony Open (125-150, 150-175 and 175-200).

7K & Above

Doug Ghim ($7,300, 5 percent)

Ghim heads into the event never making the cut, but there is a first time for everything.

Just like Kitayama, Ghim played well during the Fall Series. He made the cut in all five events he played and finished with three straight Top 25 finishes. He was second at the Shriners.

And Ghim has an elite approach game fit for this tournament. He ranks the best among the field in the three approach buckets I used on my spreadsheet.

His accuracy gives him a leg up over Kitayama and has the knack of getting to the green in regulation. Now if the putter gets hot, he should be in contention this weekend.

Punt Plays

The 6K field of golfers lacks quality for my Top DFS Plays as only 4 golfers are ranked in the Top 25 on the my spreadsheet. Henrik Norlander ($6,800, 3 percent) is the only one to reach my Top 10.
