Tonight Virginia travels to Blacksburg, VA, to take on in state rival Virginia Tech. Virginia comes into tonight’s game on a 2 game winning streak after losing to #1 Duke. They are 10-2 in the ACC with both defeats coming to Duke. They beat Notre Dame on Saturday 60-54 as they came out a little flat and played as if they were looking ahead to tonights game. The Irish pulled within 1 point late in the 2nd half before Virginia went on a 9-0 run holding the Irish scoreless for 5+ minutes. Virginia has the #1 ranked defense this year, only giving up 54.4 points per game. Virginia has been a really good shooting team this year, they are #6th in 3 point shots made with 40%. They are 4th in the country in assist/turnover ratio with 1.6. I would say their only weakness would rebounding as they only average 35.5 a game. Kyle Guy and De’Andre Hunter lead them in scoring with 15 ppg. Virginia Tech will be without 2nd leading scorer tonight in Justin Robinson, who averages 14.4 ppg,3.4 rebounds, and 5.5 assists. They have struggled since his absence going 2-2 in their last 4 games. The Hokies live and die by the 3 as they average just over 10 3 pointers per game, and are shooting the 3rd best % in the country at 41.8%. They are also a bad rebounding team averaging only 32.1 a game. Virginia Tech is 1-3 vs ranked teams this year losing to Virginia by 22 earlier this season. Virginia Tech has came out slow in 4 of their past 5 games scoring less than 30 points and being down at half in 3 of the past 4 games. Meanwhile Virginia has came out strong and has lead in 10 of their last 12 games their only 2 games they haven’t lead at half has been to #1 Duke 2 times. If Virginia can guard the 3 point line well and limit the Hokies ability to shoot from long range they should have their hands with them again. I like Virginia to come out strong after letting Notre dame hang around to long last game.
