NBA DFS – Bales’ Top GPP Plays (8/8/20)

Welcome to another edition of Bales’ Top GPP plays. In this article, I will outline my favorite NBA GPP plays for today’s games. If you want all of my core plays along with our staff’s Final Thoughts article with access to our Discord, click here

Guards

Duncan Robinson

Robinson is primarily a scorer for the Miami Heat. He’s averaging 15.5 points, 2.0 rebounds, and 1.0 assist (21.6 fantasy points) in 29.4 minutes per game in the bubble. Robinson has looked better over his last two games, scoring 24.75 and 31.25 fantasy points in 34 and 29 minutes, respectively. Most importantly, he saw 20 three-point attempts in those contests, adding to his upside.

Robinson gets a great matchup against the Phoenix Suns today. They rank ninth in the NBA in pace and 18th in defensive rating. Robinson is expected to find 30+ minutes tonight and his role in the offense will be expanded. Jimmy Butler and Kendrick Nunn have been ruled out for tonight while Goran Dragic is questionable. Robinson will be asked to shoulder more of the offensive role, and he comes with tremendous upside if he continues to take double-digit three-point attempts.

Gary Trent

Trent has found plenty of success during the NBA restart. He’s averaging 20.3 points, 1.8 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 1.0 steal (30.7 fantasy points) in 32.5 minutes per game. Trent has a massive role in the offense, averaging 11.5 shot attempts, 8.8 three-point attempts, and 1.8 free throw attempts per game in the bubble. He’s also coming off of his best game since the restart, scoring 43.75 fantasy points in 36 minutes against the Denver Nuggets.

Trent gets a tough matchup against the Los Angeles Clippers today. They rank eighth in the NBA in pace and fifth in defensive rating but will be without Kawhi Leonard in this game. Trent is expected to find minutes in the mid-30s once again and it’s clear he’s a focal point of the offense. The majority of his fantasy points come from scoring, but when he adds rebounds and assists to his lines, we find his true ceiling. Trent is surprisingly going overlooked for a reasonably low price tag on this slate and that is likely from his matchup. Still, he’s an outstanding tournament option today.

Bigs

Andre Iguodala

I recommended Iguodala against the Milwaukee Bucks and I’m going back to the well tonight. He’s playing more minutes without Jimmy Butler in the lineup, averaging 9.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, 6.0 assists, and 1.0 block (30.4 fantasy points) in 29.5 minutes per game over his last 2 contests. Iguodala has performed well in limited minutes throughout the season, so it’s far from a surprise to see him look great when given a larger workload in the rotation.

He gets a great matchup against the Phoenix Suns, which has already been outlined in the Duncan Robinson recommendation. Iguodala is currently expected to play minutes in the mid-20s but he could find 30+ if he continues to perform well on the court. He’s benefitting from the absence of Jimmy Butler and Kendrick Nunn, and he could be asked to run the offense more if Goran Dragic is also ruled out tonight. Iguodala certainly comes with some risk but his price tag doesn’t represent the upside he possesses when playing in a major role in the Miami rotation.

Cameron Johnson

Johnson has seen plenty of ups and downs during the NBA restart. Through 4 games, he’s averaging 13.3 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 2.8 assists (31.0 fantasy points) in 34.4 minutes per game. Johnson has played 36+ minutes in each of his last 3 games, scoring 37.5 and 43.5 fantasy points in a pair of them. He’s a versatile player that can contribute in multiple categories with the ability to shoot from deep. His price tag is only still so low because of a tough 22.25 fantasy point performance against the Los Angeles Clippers.

Johnson gets a matchup against the Miami Heat tonight. They rank 27th in the NBA in pace and 13th in defensive rating. Johnson is expected to find 35+ minutes once again tonight, though, as he has shown no reason to the Phoenix Suns to limit the young man’s minutes. He doesn’t possess an elite usage rating, but he’ll continue to take double-digit shot attempts while adding rebounds, assists, and steals to his line. He comes with unmatched upside at his price tag, but his ownership will stay depleted in a tough matchup against Miami.

SuperDraft

Marcus Morris (1.95x)

Morris didn’t find major minutes early in the NBA restart, but that has changed over his last two games. In those contests, he’s averaging 16.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.0 block, and 1.0 steal (28.1 fantasy points) in 36.0 minutes per game. Morris isn’t a major part of the Los Angeles Clippers offense, as he’s only taken 15 shots over his last 2 games. Kawhi Leonard is out today, though, and Morris could be forced to focus more heavily on his offensive game.

Morris gets a great matchup against the Portland Blazers today. They rank 12th in the NBA in pace and 27th in defensive rating. Morris is expected to find 30+ minutes in this game once again. He’s a bit cheap for his normal role but that could be expanded with Leonard out today. Normally, Morris isn’t a player that would catch my eye on SuperDraft, but he comes with 30+ fantasy point upside and boasts a 1.95x multiplier on this slate.
