Welcome to Brian’s CBB slate breakdown. In this article, I will share a few of my top plays on the slate, and discuss who you should target in cash and gpp contests. If you would like to gain access to our CBB core plays, final thoughts, and premium discord, click here.
Guards
Mac McClung (Texas Tech) vs. Oklahoma State
McClung leads this Texas Tech team with a 30% usage rate, and is a big source of offensive production for them. He is averaging 17 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assist and a steal per game. This will be a pace up spot for Tech, as Oklahoma State plays with one of the highest paces in the country. This is not a game that stands out to me as one that will produce tons of fantasy relevant players, but I do not mind targeting a select few from this game. McClung, Edwards, Walker and Cunningham are my targets from this game.
Jordan Goldwire (Duke) vs Syracuse
Goldwire gets a soft matchup vs. a Syracuse team that allows teams to shoot an average of 48% from the field. Goldwire is not a guy that is going to light things up with his scoring production, but he is very solid across multiple categories. Where he gets most of his upside, is through his ability to create turnovers. He is averaging 3 steals per game. He should also be tasked with guarding Syracuse’s top perimeter player, as he is Duke’s best defender, by far! With him being tasked with this, I expect he will be on the floor for close to 30 minutes, if not more. On a 3 game slate we need to find value, and with his 5.7k price tag he fills that need.
Forwards
Matthew Hurt (Duke) vs. Syracuse
Syracuse really struggles defending opposing big men, and really struggles keeping them off the boards. Matthew Hurt is not a traditional big, and is not a great rebounder, however, with Jalen Johnson no longer in the mix, and with Syracuse not deploying a traditional big, I expect Hurt to see a nice chance for an increase in rebounding production. Wendel Moore will probably benefit the most from this poor Syracuse interior, but Hurt should stand to benefit slightly from this. Hurt’s strength is his shooting ability. He is a really good 3pt shooter, something that Syracuse allows opponents to shoot at a high rate. If his shot is falling and he is able to pick up his production on the boards, he could be one of the top fantasy players on this slate. It is worth noting
Quincey Guerrier (Syracuse) vs. Duke
Guerrier is in a phenomenal spot tonight vs. a struggling Duke defense, one that really struggles guarding the paint. Guerrier is an athletic big, that I think Duke will struggle matching up with. If they put Hurt on him, he will take him down low and abuse him, if they decide to put Williams on him, I think Guerrier will pull him out to the perimeter and drive him to the rim. He is a very good rebounder and provides upside through his ability to block shots. I really like this Duke/ Syracuse game if you cannot tell. I think 3-4 plays from this game is definitely something you could consider.
