Total Base Race – Baltimore Orioles/Arizona Diamondbacks
The Arizona Diamondbacks get a great matchup against Aaron Brooks, who has struggled with a 5.16 xFIP and a 4.70 SIERA through 17 games (8 starts). He has also struggled with 40.1% fly ball and 17.9% HR/FB rates in 2019. He has given up a 36.3% hard hit rate with a 14.9% soft hit rate, as well. Brooks has been at his worst against left-handed batters, allowing them to hit for a .248 average with a .495 slugging percentage and a .338 wOBA this season. He has given up a .234/.430/.313 line to right-handed batters, as well. Most importantly, Brooks has allowed his opponents to post a .271/.531/.360 line on the road this season. Ketel Marte has been playing at an elite level for Arizona, posting a .417 average with a .778 slugging percentage and a 1.289 OPS over his last 10 games. He owns nine extra-base hits (one home run) in those games. Marte has also recorded 40% hard hit and 34% fly ball rate to go along with a 91 MPH exit velocity over that span. He has been better against left-handed pitching, but he has found more than enough success against righties to comfortably put him in this play. Eduardo Escobar owns a .283 average with a .652 slugging percentage and a .929 OPS over his last 10 games. Over that span, he has posted seven extra-base hits (four home runs). Escobar boasts 43% hard hit and 51% fly ball rates with a 95 MPH exit velocity in those games. Similarly to Marte, he has been better against lefties, but still comes with more than enough upside to be considered here. Christian Walker has been at his best against right-handed pitching, bringing 0.055 wOBA and 0.058 ISO differentials against righties into this game. He’s only hitting .206 with a .412 slugging percentage and a .790 OPS over his last 10 games. He boasts three extra-base hits (two home runs) in those games, as well. He could be in line for a breakout, though, as he has posted 45% hard hit and 36% fly ball rates to go along with a 94 MPH exit velocity over the last 15 days. Brooks has thrown 56 or fewer pitches in each of his last 10 games, meaning Arizona will see plenty of the Baltimore bullpen, which is one of the worst in the MLB, adding to their upside.
