Total Base Race – Kansas City Royals/Cleveland Indians
The Cleveland Indians get a great matchup against Mike Montgomery tonight. He has struggled through 20 games with the Chicago Cubs this season, posting a 4.86 xFIP and a 5.25 SIERA. He has held his opponents to a 23.3% fly ball rate, although he has allowed them to record a 28.6% HR/FB rate in 2019. Montgomery has also allowed his opponents to post a 41.8% hard hit rate, while recording only an 11% soft hit rate in those games. He is allowing right-handed batters to hit for a .232 average with a .464 slugging percentage and a .336 wOBA. Montgomery has also allowed his opponents to post a .400/.817/.513 line on the road this season. Francisco Lindor has seen a few ups and downs recently, posting a .256 average with a .512 slugging percentage and a .801 OPS over his last 10 games. He boasts five extra-base hits (three home runs) in those games, as well. Lindor has also recorded 34% hard hit and 40% fly ball rates with a 92 MPH exit velocity over that span. He has been slightly more consistent against left-handed pitching, as well, brings a 0.016 wOBA differential against lefties into this game. Carlos Santana is in a similar position to Lindor, as he boasts a 0.022 wOBA differential against left-handed pitching. He’s also hitting only .211 with a .474 slugging percentage and a .807 OPS over his last 10 games. Over that span, he owns six extra-base hits (two home runs). Santana also boasts 48% hard hit and 45% fly ball rates to go along with a 91 MPH exit velocity over the last 15 days. Jose Ramirez has been one of the hottest players in the MLB recently, posting a .366 average with a .780 slugging percentage and a 1.153 OPS over his last 10 games. He owns nine extra-base hits (four home runs) over that span, as well. Ramirez also possesses 58% hard hit and 33% fly ball rates with a 95 MPH exit velocity in those games. He enters this game with a 0.006 wOBA differential against left-handed pitching. I considered Jordan Luplow and Oscar Mercado in this play, as well, but ultimately, this trio makes a bit more sense for this surprisingly low total.
