Total Base Race – Detroit Tigers/Cleveland Indians
I’m going back to the well with the Cleveland Indians tonight. They get a matchup against Spencer Turnbull, who has major splits as a pitcher in 2019. He has looked great against right-handed batters, but he has yet to figure out lefties. Through 44.0 innings against left-handed batters, he has struggled with a 5.70 xFIP. His strikeout rate also drops to only 15.7% in those games. Furthermore, he has given up 34.2% fly ball and 12% HR/FB rates against left-handed batters. Turnbull has also allowed lefties to hit for a 38.8% hard hit rate this season, while posting only a 15.7% soft hit rate. Overall, he has given up a .288 average with a .463 slugging percentage and a .355 wOBA to left-handed batters in 2019. Francisco Lindor enters this game with a .273 average, .455 slugging percentage, and .774 OPS over his last 10 games. He owns four extra-base hits (two home runs) in those games, as well. Surprisingly, he owns 25% hard hit and 40% fly ball rates with a 91 MPH exit velocity over the last 15 days. Lindor features similar splits against left- and right-handed pitchers, and he should find success from the left side of the plate tonight. Carlos Santana is hitting .263 with a .553 slugging percentage and a .944 OPS over his last 10 games. He also boasts five extra-base hits (three home runs) over that span. In those games, Santana has posted 41% hard hit and fly ball rates to go along with a 90 MPH exit velocity over the last 15 days. He has been significantly more powerful at home, and he brings a 0.041 ISO differential against right-handed pitching into this game. Jose Ramirez has also been a more powerful option from the left side of the plate, posting a 0.032 ISO differential against right-handed pitching. Ramirez has also been playing well recently, recording a .310 average with a .619 slugging percentage and a .937 OPS over his last 10 games. He owns seven extra-base hits (three home runs) in those games. Ramirez also possesses 50% hard hit and 38% fly ball rates to go along with a 92 MPH exit velocity over the last 15 days. Cleveland features an implied run total of 5.8 runs tonight, and using the left-handed batters against Turnbull in this play makes the most sense. This total is also set at bit low at only 6.5 total bases.
