Total Base Race – Minnesota Twins/Detroit Tigers
The Minnesota Twins get an elite matchup against Ryan Carpenter today. He has struggled with a 1-2 record, 6.23 ERA, and 1.35 WHIP through five starts. He also owns a 5.34 xFIP and a 5.02 SIERA this season. Furthermore, Carpenter has allowed 40.9% fly ball and 19.4% HR/FB rates in 2019. His opponents have recorded a 42% hard hit rate against him, while he owns only a 17% soft hit rate. He has struggled against right-handed batters this season, allowing them to hit for a .259 average with a .543 slugging percentage and a 3.58 wOBA. Carpenter has also allowed his opponents to hit for a .338/.632/.411 line at home this season. Nelson Cruz recently returned to the Minnesota lineup, and he has hit a home run in each of his last three games. He has also posted 66% hard hit and fly ball rates to go along with a 100 MPH exit velocity over the last 15 days. Furthermore, Cruz has been at his best against left-handed pitching, as he enters this game with 0.046 wOBA and 0.07 ISO differentials against lefties. Overall, Cruz enters this game with a .267 average, .633 slugging percentage, .367 ISO, and .401 wOBA against lefties. C.J. Cron is another player, who has been at his best against left-handed pitching, as he brings 0.114 wOBA and 0.085 ISO differentials against lefties into this game. He enters this game with a .360 average, .780 slugging percentage, .420 ISO, and .479 wOBA against left-handed pitching. Cron has been playing well recently, posting a .256 average with a .462 slugging percentage and a .787 OPS over his last 10 games. He owns six extra-base hits (one home run) in those games. He also owns 39% hard hit and fly ball rates with a 92 MPH exit velocity over the last 15 days. Byron Buxton is hitting last in the Twins lineup, which means he may go overlooked, but this is an elite matchup for him. He’s hitting .321 with a .679 slugging percentage and a 1.023 OPS over his last 10 games. He owns five extra-base hits (two home runs) in those games. Buxton also enters this game with 0.125 wOBA and 0.062 ISO differentials against left-handed pitching. He is hitting .364 with a .659 slugging percentage, .295 ISO, and .441 wOBA against lefties this season, as well. The Twins have a few elite bats for this play, but these are the three options I’m rolling with.
