Total Base Race – Atlanta Braves/Chicago Cubs
I’m going back to the well with the same trio tonight. The Atlanta Braves get a matchup against Jon Lester, who has thrown relatively well this season, posting a 4.24 xFIP and a 4.16 SIERA through 14 starts. He has struggled a bit with 37% fly ball and 16.5% HR/FB rates in 2019. He has also given up a 41.6% hard hit rate, while posting only a 15% soft hit rate. He has struggled against both left- and right-handed batters this season. Lefties are hitting .309 with a .481 slugging percentage and a .351 wOBA against him, while righties own a .269/.484/.336 line. This play isn’t about Lester, though. The matchup truly doesn’t matter in this situation, as the wind is blowing out to right field at 15 MPH tonight. We’ll see a massive boost for bats in this game. Ronald Acuna Jr. continues to play at a high level, posting a .304 average with a .543 slugging percentage and a .928 OPS over his last 10 games. He owns five extra-base hits (three home runs) in those contests, as well. He also boasts 52% hard hit and 48% fly ball rates with a 94 MPH exit velocity over the last 15 days. If that isn’t enough convincing, Acuna enters this game with 0.072 wOBA and 0.1 ISO differentials against right-handed pitching. Freddie Freeman is a gets a lefty-lefty matchup against Lester, but he has been nearly an identical hitter against either handedness this season. He’s another player that has looked outstanding in recent games, though, posting a .357 average with a .714 slugging percentage and a 1.140 OPS over his last 10 games. In those games, he has recorded eight extra-base hits (three home runs). Freeman brings 62% hard hit and 39% fly ball rates with a 97 MPH exit velocity over the last 15 days into this game, as well. Josh Donaldson is the hottest hitter for Atlanta right now, though. Over the last 15 days, he owns 45% hard hit and 36% fly ball rates with a 93 MPH exit velocity. He has turned that into a .415 average with a .927 slugging percentage and a 1.381 OPS over his last 10 games. He boasts nine extra-base hits (six home runs) in those contests. Similarly to Freeman, Donaldson has found success against both left- and right-handed pitching this season. Keep in mind, batters in this game should find plenty of success, and the Chicago Cubs players can be interchanged here, as well, if you like them better.
