Counting Ks – Los Angeles Angels/Tampa Bay Rays
This prop is surprisingly low for two elite strikeout pitchers in the MLB. Andrew Heaney has only started three games this season, but he has posted a 3.06 xFIP and a 2.35 SIERA in those games. His only struggles have come with home runs, and his fly ball and HR/FB rates will likely see positive regression as he throws more innings. Heaney enters this game with an elite 41.8% strikeout rate to go along with a 19.4% swinging strike rate. While these numbers are likely unsustainable, he has posted 8+ strikeouts in each of his three starts, including a pair of starts with double-digit strikeouts. Heaney gets a matchup against the Tampa Bay Rays, who don’t strikeout at an elite rate against left-handed pitching, but also aren’t a dominant option against righties. Heaney could see regression in this game, and this duo could easily still find the over with their strikeout potential. The other side of this play is Blake Snell, who has also been an elite strikeout pitcher this season. He enters this game with a 2.70 xFIP and a 3.04 SIERA, suggesting he could pitch deep into this game. He also boasts 34.5% strikeout and 19.4% swinging strike rates through 13 starts. Snell has also recorded 7+ strikeouts in six of his last seven games. He gets a tough matchup against the Los Angeles Angels, who don’t strikeout at a high rate, but this matchup is clearly displayed in the total. Each of these two pitchers come with double-digit strikeout potential, even in these matchups. Essentially, both pitchers only need seven strikeouts to find the over, and their swinging strike rates suggest that could be relatively easy, even in these matchups.
