Total Base Race – San Diego Padres/Colorado Rockies
The Colorado Rockies get a matchup against Matt Strahm tonight. He has seen plenty of ups and downs through 11 starts this season, posting a 2-5 record with a 4.03 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP. He has struggled a bit more than that, though, as he owns a 4.45 xFIP and a 4.14 SIERA this season. Strahm has allowed a 42.3% fly ball rate in 2019, although he has held his opponents to a 13.5% HR/FB rate. He has also given up a 47.2% hard hit rate, while recording only an 18.9% soft hit rate this season. Strahm has struggled more against left-handed batters in 2019, allowing them to record a .353 average with a .510 slugging percentage and a .399 wOBA. He has also allowed a .225/.423/.289 line to righties this season. Strahm’s inability to control his opponents power could be devastating at Coors Field tonight. Charlie Blackmon is expected to lead off for the Rockies tonight, and he has looked elite recently. Over his last 10 games, he owns a .349 average with a .651 slugging percentage and a 1.029 OPS. He owns six extra-base hits (three home runs) over that span. Still, some of those games were before Blackmon’s injury, but he has recorded 37% hard hit and 50% fly ball rates to go along with a 92 MPH exit velocity since returning. He has been at his best against right-handed pitching, but he still owns a .349 average with a .744 slugging percentage, 1.152 OPS, .462 wOBA, and .395 ISO at home against left-handed pitching. Trevor Story has cooled down quite a bit recently, as he’s only hitting .200 with a .300 slugging percentage and a .573 OPS over his last 10 games. He owns four doubles over that span, as well. With that being said, Story owns 45% hard hit and 32% fly ball rates with a 91 MPH exit velocity over the last 15 days. Most importantly, he owns a .312 average with a .722 slugging percentage, 1.113 OPS, .452 wOBA, and .409 ISO at home against left-handed pitching through his career. Nolan Arenado is a player that hasn’t been playing overly well over his last 10 games, but makes a great option tonight. Over that span, he owns a .242 average with a .424 slugging percentage and a .758 OPS. He has also recorded two home runs in those games. Arenado has also posted 29% hard hit and 41% fly ball rates with a 91 MPH exit velocity over the last 15 days. He boasts 0.118 wOBA and 0.175 ISO differentials against left-handed pitching, as well. On the season, Arenado is hitting .406 with a .750 slugging percentage, 1.263 OPS, .511 wOBA, and .344 ISO against left-handed pitching in Coors. The Rockies feature the highest implied run total on the slate (6.3 runs), and they should find plenty of success in this game.
