Over Under 2/2 – Seattle Mariners/New York Yankees
This was the play that I wanted to make, and I was surprised at the lines once I logged in to see them. Leake has struggled for the most part this season, including with his strikeouts, as he owns only four strikeouts in each of his last five starts. He enters this game with an 18.3% strikeout rate to go along with an 8.7% swinging strike rate. Throughout his career, his strikeout rate has dropped slightly on the road, as well. He gets a matchup against the New York Yankees, who rank fourth last on the slate in strikeouts per at-bat, while also ranking second in team wOBA. Leake will likely struggle to pitch deep into this game, and I would have truly considered him under 3.5 strikeouts tonight, as well. J.A. Happ has struggled mightily with a 16.8% strikeout rate in 2019, but that doesn’t match his 9.5% swinging strike rate. I’m expecting him to see positive regression in terms of strikeouts, and that could start tonight. He gets a matchup against the Seattle Mariners, who lead the slate in strikeouts per at-bat, while also ranking in the bottom-four in team wOBA. Seattle has a few strong left-handed batters, who aren’t in the lineup or will be neutralized by Happ’s ability to limit damage from the left-side of the plate. I’d have truly considered Happ over 5.5 strikeouts tonight, as well.
