Over Under 2/2 – Colorado Rockies/Philadelphia Phillies
Jon Gray has found plenty of strikeout success this season, posting a 25.1% strikeout rate to go along with a 12.3% swinging strike rate through eight starts. He has also recorded 17 strikeouts over his last two starts (11.2 innings). Gray gets a matchup against the Philadelphia Phillies, who rank fourth last on the slate in strikeouts per at-bat, although they also rank well below average in team wOBA. He should be able to pitch deep into this game, and Gray has the potential to cover the majority of the total needed if his stuff is working. Cole Irvin only has one career start in the MLB, posting five strikeouts over seven innings. He has never been an elite strikeout pitcher throughout his minor league career, though, and that isn’t likely to change in the Majors. With that being said, Irving gets a matchup against the Colorado Rockies, who rank fifth on the slate in strikeouts per at-bat and third last in team wOBA. He has the potential to find similar success to his first start, although I don’t fully expect him to need five strikeouts to hit the over in this place. For what it’s worth, I’m fine pairing these two over 10.5 strikeouts for 2x, as well.
