Julio Teheran has posted a surprising 24.3% strikeout rate in 2019, while also posting an 11.3% swinging strike rate. He has only thrown more than six innings once this season, and this is a difficult matchup. Teheran will face off against the St. Louis Cardinals, who rank third last on the slate in strikeouts per at-bat. They also rank third on the slate in team wOBA. Without the ability to pitch more than six innings in this matchup, Teheran could struggle to hit the over against St. Louis. Adam Wainwright hasn’t been an elite strikeout option this season, as he only owns a 20.3% strikeout rate to go along with a 6.8% swinging strike rate. Furthermore, the Atlanta Braves rank last on the slate in strikeouts per at-bat. They also rank last in team wOBA, but that may not matter in this game. Wainwright has only posted 5+ strikeouts in three of his eight starts this season. I’m expecting him to struggle a bit against Atlanta, and he will likely struggle to produce strikeouts even if he finds success in this matchup.
