Lucas Giolito has finally flashed the “stuff” that has made him a strong prospect prior to joining the MLB. He has been throwing his changeup at a significantly higher rate this season, and that has been his best pitch. Through six starts, he owns an elite 29.2% strikeout rate to go along with a 12% swinging strike rate. He’s also averaging a healthy 6.3 strikeouts per game this season, while recording 5+ strikeouts in five of his six starts. He gets a plus matchup against the Toronto Blue Jays, who rank fifth on the slate in strikeouts per at-bat. They also feature an average team wOBA, and Giolito should be able to pitch relatively deep into this game. Aaron Sanchez has seen plenty of ups and downs this season, but he has posted 5+ strikeouts in five of his eight starts. He enters this game with 19.1% strikeout and 9.1% swinging strike rates. More importantly, he gets a plus matchup against the Chicago White Sox, who rank sixth on the slate in strikeouts per at-bat, while also ranking third last in team wOBA. Similarly to Giolito, I expect Sanchez to see plenty of innings in this game, allowing him to find the over, as well.
