Matt Harvey has struggled quite a bit since 2016, as he has posted a 7.1 K/9 over 69 games (64 starts) since then. Prior to that, Harvey owned a 9.5 K/9 over 65 starts. His swinging strike rate has consistently decreased throughout his career, but this is simply a plus matchup. The Texas Rangers have struggled away from home, and they feature the highest strikeout per at-bat out of the 7 PM or later games. Harvey threw six innings in his first matchup, and that could be the case again tonight. If he does, five strikeouts is far from out of the question. Edinson Volquez hasn’t been known as a strikeout pitcher throughout his career, and his 7.7 career K/9 has dropped to only a 6.9 K/9 since 2014. He gets a matchup against the Los Angeles Angels, who rank second last on the slate in strikeouts per at-bat. Volquez only threw four innings in his first start this season, and we could see similar results in this game. He has struggled with control since returning to the MLB, and that will limit the amount of innings he can potentially throw.
