Total Base Race – San Francisco Giants/Los Angeles Dodgers
The Los Angeles Dodgers get an elite matchup against Tyler Beede, who has struggled throughout the 2019 season. Through six games (four starts), he has posted an 0-2 record with an 8.06 ERA and a 2.06 WHIP. He also owns a 5.09 xFIP and a 5.21 SIERA in those games. He has held his opponents to a 30.4% fly ball rate, while allowing a 23.8% HR/FB rate. Beede has also given up a 39.1% hard hit rate to go along with an 18.8% soft hit rate in 2019. Most importantly, he has thrown his four-seam fastball 57.1% of the time, which could pose a problem against Los Angeles. Beede has been at his worst against left-handed batters, allowing them to hit for a .382 average with a .735 slugging percentage and a .472 wOBA. He has also given up a .313/.578/.414 line on the road this season. Joc Pederson has been ice cold recently, as he owns only 1 hit over his last 31 at-bats. With that being said, he’s hitting .258 with a .720 slugging percentage and a 1.076 OPS through 31 home games. He also owns 16 extra-base hits (13 home runs) in those games. Pederson has dominated right-handed pitching, as he enters this game with 0.147 wOBA and 0.188 ISO differentials against righties. While his recent struggles are concerning, his upside in this matchup is more than enough of a reason to play him. If you’re looking for someone a bit safer, Justin Turner fits the bill. Cody Bellinger is another player that has looked elite in Los Angeles this season. Through 35 home games, he is hitting .397 with a .786 slugging percentage and a 1.272 OPS. He has recorded 19 extra-base hits (15 home runs) in those games. Bellinger has also posted 56% hard hit and 40% fly ball rates with a 96 MPH exit velocity over the last 15 days. Furthermore, he owns 0.084 wOBA and 0.09 ISO differentials against right-handed pitching. Max Muncy is the hottest player of this trio, as he’s hitting .314 with a .686 slugging percentage and a 1.140 OPS over his last 10 games. He also owns five extra-base hits (four home runs) in those games. Muncy also brings 53% hard hit and 43% fly ball rates with a 98 MPH exit velocity over the last 15 days into this game. He has recorded 0.019 wOBA and 0.017 ISO differentials against right-handed pitching. I expect Los Angeles to find plenty of success with power in this matchup.
